Public schools won championships 22 times in the first 28 years.
Private schools have won championships 10 out of the last 12 years. There has been at least one private school in the championship game 13 years in a row dating back to 2002.
This is why other states use the multiplier system. Depending on the state each private schools enrollment number would be multiplied by 1.5 on up to 2. So most of these private schools currently in D4 would be playing against D3 public schools in the playoffs.
Coach Nightingale would tell you 90% of Salesian students live within 5 to 10 miles of the school. This might be true, but that leaves a lot of openings for the Javid Bests and Freddie Tagoloas of the area.
Nightingale needs to grow a pair,and play up like marin cath and newman....or would he rather have first round byes then play a tomales/upperlake/calistoga? PLAY UP! where is your pride? did you not beat st marys and el cerrito this year? d3 and d4 section champs.
I don't know...I'm a public school guy but I feel that the playoffs would tank if we seperated or moved private schools out of the fold. The NCS and CIF have rules that govern certain aspects of enrollment and player eligibility. McClymonds had to forfeit 4 games and likely cost themselves a regional game invite over player eligibility. So I say play on. The winner of the Salesian - St. Helena game just might get an invite for the small school regional game.
I have helped coach at a public school for a few years now. Our main goal is to try to win a league title. Playoffs is just extra football anymore. The spred from 500-1100 is alot. Unless you just happen to have the one in a blue moon team it is very difficult to compete in D4 now. I dont know what the answer is, but it is broken.
And that spread or greater exists in many leagues right now let alone in one Division. Ultimately all the teams north and south will fit into equal sized divisions. There is no way to make it perfect for everyone without sacrificing the post season. This year we may have a D5 champ who beat the D4 champ or D4 champ who beat the D3 champ.
The only answer I have came up with the is to make more divisions so school sizes can stay closer. Maybe then more small public school may be able to be more competitive in the playoffs. And yes, I am a bit bitter. Its so hard for us to be competitive in playoffs even when we have a good team.

The NCS doubles the enrollment number for all single gender private schools in the section.

Private schools should not be playing smaller rural public schools. Talk about an uneven playing field.

Justin-Stena plays in the MCAL. Where they beat Division 3, and 2 teams these year. Including Marin Catholic.
That is fantastic. Justin-Siena has a great program. Maybe they should play up in D3 in playoffs as well.
