Playoffs Part II

I was emailed a PDF from a follower of the blog that the NCS had sent to all Division IV coaches. The NCS is giving the selection committee the authority to extend the length of the Division IV playoffs in order to seed up to 16 teams. So I would expect us to have at minimum 10 teams in the playoffs this year.

Would it be wise to extend the playoffs to 10 teams? I mean granted if that happens, Justin and McKinnlyville would fill in nicely, but that would leave one team with a second round bye, would it not? It seems logical to expand the field to 16 if any at all, that way it progress smoothly.

Twelve team playoff brackets seem pretty popular this year in other sports. Maybe they will go to twelve. Just a thought.

Would the top four teams get byes in a 12 team bracket?

I think you're right, 12 would be the way to go. The top four teams would get a bye the first week.

no no no... Where are you going to get the time for all this? 8 is plenty, if you put any more teams in the playoffs you would have teams with sub .500 records. When was the last time a team below the 5 seed won the NCS Division 4 championship?

The Div IV championship will be played the same weekend as the Div I, II and III championships. So the extra round does not change much.

"If you put any more teams in the playoffs you would have teams with sub .500 records."

Im not sure what division your looking at, but there will be teams at or above .500 to fill out a 12 team bracket in Div IV.

Im thinking Willits in 1991.

How long has it been since a team other than Justin Siena, Ferndale, St. Patricks or Salesian won the NCS Div IV championship?

Too long!

The expansion of the bracket will not change this or much at all, but it will open up some spots for deserving teams. Oh and hopefully it will produce some more exciting football for fans to watch.
