Recruiting II

According to Scout.com, two St. Mary's players are being recruited by Div. I, Div. II, and Div. III schools.

Wide Receiver Najee Lovett is being recruited by Cal Poly; Hawaii; North Dakota; Oregon; San Jose State; TCU; and UCLA.

Safety Henry Organ is being recruited by Cal Poly; Oregon State; Portland State; San Diego State; San Jose State; Southern Utah; UC Davis; and UCLA.

Several players from Div. IV have scouting reports on ESPN's recruiting website, including Fort Bragg running back Jake Cimolino.

If you know of anyone from our division who is being recruited by any four year school, let us know.

Recruiting

I'd like to keep track of any players that get the chance to perform at the next level. Does anyone know of any NCS Div. IV players who are being recruited by a four year school? If you do, let us know what programs.

Also, if any former NCS Division IV players are currently playing at the next level, please post that as well.

State Championship Games

Well, the state "Bowl Games" are set. This year, once again, there is no Division IV game. From the small school division (400 or less enrollment), it jumps to division III (1,250 or less). This combines Div. IV schools and most Div. III schools. They should find a way to make it more equitable. Right now, the way the state championship is set up, it favors teams from the south on many levels -- including the breakdown of enrollment size/division. Not to mention all the games are all played in the south.

Two teams from the NCS made it: De la Salle and Marin Catholic. Good luck to both.

Perhaps if they create a Div. IV field next year, we might be able to root for one of our teams in the future.

Playoffs

Congratulations to Fort Bragg, our new Div. IV NCS Section champion and to Justin Siena for a great year.

Congratulations to all the teams that made the playoffs. As a whole, this was the best post season yet. I hope they continue the expanded field because this year has shown that more than 8 teams are able to compete and win it all.

Semi-Finals

Here are the match-ups for the Semis:

Friday Night:

Valley Christian @ Justin Siena

Saturday Afternoon:

Fort Bragg @ Salesian

Saturday, November 28, 2009

Final Scores

I was remiss in not posting these officially, but here they are now:

Valley Christian 30, Middletown 29 (OT)

Fort Bragg 14, Ferndale 13 (OT)

Justin Siena 22, St. Mary's 21

Salesian 20, St. Patrick-St. Vincent 14 (OT)

Again, what terrific games.

What a Weekend

Thanks to everyone for posting updated scores today.

Wow! Three of the top four seeded teams lose at home, all by one point, two in OT. The fourth game, Salesian-St. Patrick-St. Vincent, also went into OT with Salesian pulling it out 20-14. Four teams advance to the semi-finals, but by the hair of their chinny-chin-chin. St. Mary's, Ferndale, Middletown, and St. Patrick-St. Vincent had great seasons and they should be proud of their showing in the playoffs.

I can't wait to see what happens next week!

Saturday's Games

Today there are three playoff games:

Fort Bragg @ Ferndale

St. Patrick-St. Vincent @ Salesian

Justin Siena @ St. Mary's

I have to work, so I won't be able to post until I get home at 5:30. If you are at one of the games or listening to it on the radio, please post score updates as comments to this post.

Playoffs Part II

I was emailed a PDF from a follower of the blog that the NCS had sent to all Division IV coaches. The NCS is giving the selection committee the authority to extend the length of the Division IV playoffs in order to seed up to 16 teams. So I would expect us to have at minimum 10 teams in the playoffs this year.

Monday, November 2, 2009

Playoffs

As it turns out, our earlier information was wrong. The expanded seeds for the playoffs only applies to other sports this year(basketball, baseball, etc.). The key being that the extra seeds cannot push back the posted date for the NCS championship (which is December 4th or 5th for Division IV).

Next year they might consider this change and push the championship back a week or two. But this year, we will have 8 seeds in the playoffs.

Sunday, November 1, 2009

Weekly Rankings

1. Ferndale (8-0) – Should blow out St. Bernard’s at home.

2. St. Mary’s (6-2) – Crushed John Swett 42-7.

3. Salesian (7-1) – Clinched Bay League title with 40-7 win over Valley Christian.

4. Middletown (7-1) – Scored 40 or more points three weeks in a row.

5. Cloverdale (7-1) – Impressive 31-14 win over Fort Bragg .

6. St. Patrick-St. Vincent (5-3) – Lost to Encinal 55-19.

7. Fort Bragg (6-2) – Faces a resurgent Willits team that has scored 142 points in the last two games.

8. Berean Christian (6-2) – Will likely take second place in the Bay League.

Bubble Teams: Justin Siena & McKinleyville

Something to Debate

I know that it is sometimes difficult to keep a game from getting out of control. We've had some games this year where some felt that perhaps one team or another should have done more to keep from pouring on points against an already defeated team. But as I said, sometimes the score gets out of hand, even when scrubs are in the game and a team keeps running the same dive play over and over.

However, the write up of this game (Willits 68, Lower lake 18) is something that struck me as something we might debate.

A couple of interesting excerpts from the article:

"One week after running up the score in a 74-0 interlock win at Upper Lake, the Wolverines (2-0 North, 3-5 overall) left their starters in almost until the very end against the Trojans (0-3, 1-7), something that was not lost on Lower Lake coach Stan Weiper, whose team trailed 44-18 at halftime and 60-18 after three quarters.

Willits attempted onside or pooch kicks after each of its scores, even after the game had been decided.

"They're obviously trying to get the ball back," Weiper said."

So, what do you think?

What a Weekend

Many are saying the Middletown-Fort Bragg game was one of the best this year. The St. Mary's-Encinal game was another one that many enjoyed. Overall, Middletown has gone over the hump and will definitely crack the top four. St. Mary's, though they lost by a touchdown to Encinal, has proven they are among the elite in Div. IV. Ferndale continues to dominate other teams and Salesian is heading towards another Bay League title. St. Patrick-St. Vincent and Fort Bragg are still strong teams destined for the playoffs. If Cloverdale can beat St. Vincent the last week of the regular season, they will win the NCL I South title and lock up an automatic berth in the playoffs. Berean Christian, McKinleyville, and Justin Siena will fight for the last at-large spot.

What are your thoughts on the teams who are on the bubble to make the playoffs?

Although Salesian topped St. Patrick-St. Vincent earlier in the year, I think things have come full circle. I believe that the top five ranked teams are actually pretty equal. It looks like it will be a great season and a very competitive post season.

Unbelievable Game

St. Mary's 26, St. Patrick-St. Vincent 20

With no time left on the clock and the score tied at 20, the St. Patrick-St. Vincent Quarterback Brandon Brown dropped back and threw a pass that was intercepted by defensive lineman Marcus Edwards. Edwards returned the ball to about the 10 yard line where he was being tackled. He quickly tossed the ball to another St. Mary's player who scored the winning touchdown. Game over.

Last night, Clear Lake played Middletown pretty tough; Berean Christian got to within 2 points of Salesian in the 3rd quarter before losing by 10; and Fort Bragg continued to roll over whomever was lined up on the other side of the ball. It was a great night and today won't be any different. There are several match-ups in today's games to keep an eye on.

This Weekend's Games

Several Division IV teams take the field tonight. Below are the list of games. I'll keep track of some games and post updated scores here. If you catch any scores, please post them in the comments section.

Valley Christian vs. Cochrane

Berean Christian vs. El Molino

Salesian at St. Patrick/St. Vincent

Healdsburg at McKinleyville

East Nicholaus at Ferndale

Sacred Heart Cathedral vs. Justin Siena

I think two games that would be interesting and fun to watch would be the Healdsburg-McKinleyville match-up and the Sacred Heart Cathedral-Justin Siena game. But, for Division IV, nothing beats two playoff powerhouses from the previous year doing battle. The game of the week for me is Salesian vs. St. Patrick/St. Vincent.

New Season

Some teams open their season September 4th while others have a scrimmage on that weekend. I will be at the Lake County scrimmage and will post photos and a brief synopsis of the match-ups. As far as new teams or lost teams in Division IV, we lost Dougherty Valley and Upper Lake, but gained McKinleyville and Valley Christian. It looks like it will be an exciting year once again!

Injuries

I learned this week that Middletown's top receiver, Dylan Galusha, broke his leg in a motorcycle accident. I hope he is fully recovered by the time the season starts. I have no idea as to the severity of the break, but I will post more as I learn it.
